Secondary School NewsDecember 10, 2020
I have to start by writing that 2020 was a year which I believe will be a talking point for students, staff and parents for many years to come. The year where your child had to stay home during a school term and complete their learning online. A year where Zooming and Teams became the way to meet your daughter/s teachers instead of by face to face meetings. A year where we couldn’t invite you all to our Presentation Night, final assemblies and final Mass due to social distancing and we appreciated that you all understood.
I have to say the last weeks of the term have been hectic for all the students. The Year 11 and 10s had their exams and End of Year Mass where we presented them some final awards for the year. While they were doing their exams, the Year 7s were transitioned from the Year 7 block into the mainstream secondary classes preparing them for their future years as secondary students.
We managed to have a couple of dance socials with the young gentlemen from Mazenod for the Year 7s and 8s. At first, the young people looked out of their comfort zone, but by the second dance, they were all participating and enjoying the evenings. It was great to see the young ladies have the opportunity to socialise as a cohort out of school hours.
We had the opportunity to welcome the new students for 2021. The young ladies who are joining the SBC community were excited to be at school for a day creating new friends and seeing first hand, what it is like to be a student at St Brigid’s. With the support of the current students, as well as some staff members, the young ladies were able to try out cooking, doing some Science experiments and some practise their Drama skills, while the older students had the opportunity to sit in class with their buddies and create new memories. The girls left with phone numbers of their new friends and are excited for 2021.
The Year 7 girls had the experience of going to Mazenod and using their Design and Technology facilities to make a key ring. The girls used a drop drill, and a sander, then watched as a Mazenod teachers lasered their initials into their keyring. The girls enjoyed this experience, so dad’s keep a close eye on your drill and drill bits from now on!
We ended the term with an activity day where the students participated in a variety of activities. The Year 7s went to Latitude where they climbed and bounced. The Year 8s did rock climbing, self-defence and cartoon drawing and the Year 9s slid on the water slides, raced through commando course created with a difference (air-filled one), volleyball and frisbee games followed by a Kahoot quiz session. There were many tired but happy girls by the end of the day.
We celebrated and said our goodbyes to the students and staff who are leaving us at our Final Mass, presented the final awards for 2020 at our closing assembly and announced the College Assistant Leaders (previously called the Middle School Leaders) for 2021.
