St Brigid’s Hosts Carita’s Project Compassion Launch 2024

Published 14/02/2024 · Academic

Project Compassion 2024 was officially launched to Catholic schools around Western Australia on 12 February 2024. St Brigid’s College was proud to be the host school which presented the online launch webinar to 60 schools.

The morning started with a welcome from Mrs Veronica Parker, St Brigid’s Principal and thereafter a liturgy, celebrated by Fr Michael McMahon, OMI, the St Brigid’s College Senior Choir and students from both the Primary and Secondary campus.

Deacon Paul Reid, Community Engagement Animator for Caritas Australia WA/SA, addressed the live and online participants and introduced the theme for 2024, ‘For All Future Generations’. This theme has been drawn from the story of the burning bush in Exodus 3:1-20.

St Brigid’s student leaders moderated the event and introduced Koreen Cueto, Program Coordinator, Indonesia & Vietnam – who shared some real life insights of the support Caritas provides through Project Compassion.

Workshops were then moderated by SBC students, for all schools to participate online – participants had to analyse a short video outlining the programs and stories of the 2024 campaign> One activity gave them the opportunity to meet Ronita, through a video, and heard her story, they were then  asked to create a Student Action Plan to show how their school would support Caritas.

As it was Shrove Tuesday, the launch ended with the students and guests partaking and enjoying pancakes over a conversation.

Year 11 Biology Embraces the Bush!
Gear up for adventure! Last week, our intrepid Year 11 Biology students swapped the classroom for the great outdoors, participating in a special field camp at Dwellingup alongside Mazenod College. This immersive experience provided a first-hand look at the fascinating world of ecological monitoring. Guided by the esteemed Mr. C, Environmental Educator of the Year, the students learned the art of fauna trapping – a crucial skill for understanding native animal populations. Just before sunset they set traps to capture nocturnal visitors, waking before dawn with anticipation to see what critters called the bushland home. Their efforts were rewarded with the exciting discovery of three Mardos and a curious Quenda! While the day brought a quite a bit of rain, the students’ spirits remained high as they delved into the techniques of flora surveys. Despite returning a little soggy, their knowledge and enthusiasm were truly enriched. This valuable camp experience forms the foundation for an exciting project back at St Brigid’s. The Year 11 biologists will now conduct a baseline flora survey of our very own school bushland. Armed with this data, they’ll then develop a conservation plan to ensure this precious ecosystem thrives for future generations. Stay tuned! We can’t wait to see the amazing results of their exploration and conservation efforts.
